Music Therapy FAQs

Check below to see if we can answer one of your questions!

According to the American Music Therapy Association, Music Therapy is “the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.”

Music Therapists can work with all ages and ranges of diagnosis. Individuals who can benefit from music therapy are children, adolescents and adults with…

  • Developmental Disabilities (Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, etc.)
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Mental Health
  • Physical Disabilities
  • Alzheimers Disease
  • Dementia and other related memory loss
  • Neonative Intensive Care Unit & Pediatric Hospital Floors
  • Early Childhood/Developmental Goals
While this list give an idea as to who can be served with music therapy, there are many other individuals who may benefit from services as well.

Music Therapy sessions are guided by the goals and objectives created by the therapist and based upon the client’s current strength’s and needs. During sessions, the music therapist uses motivating and engaging music-based interventions to target things such as social skills, communication, emotional regulation, impulse control, and more. A few experiences that might occur in music therapy are songwriting, active improvisation, therapeutic singing, and music assisted relaxation.

Due to music’s natural motivating nature, music therapy is a great way to engage your child while simultaneously working on their strengths and needs. A few of these therapeutic goals may be…

  • Enhancing socialization through group music-making
  • Encouraging communication through verbal and non-verbal interactions
  • Increasing self-expression through multi-modal experiences
  • Targeting impulse control and turn-taking through music-based games and activities

The nonverbal aspects of music allow all individuals the ability to fully express and obtain autonomy and control throughout sessions.

Individual Music Therapy sessions are held in our music therapy studio space or in your own home. We like to believe that by engaging with the individual in their own environment we are able to provide them with as much control and autonomy as possible. All instruments needed for sessions are provided by the music therapist and brought to each session.

Group Music Therapy Sessions are held in our music therapy studio space. Let us know if you would like your child enrolled in one of our group sessions!
